What I do

Who I am
If you asked a random sample of people who know me to describe me, I imagine the two most common descriptors would be “fun” and “nerdy.” My sense of fun is likely the easiest thing to notice, since I am probably smiling or laughing. My nerdiness is less immediately observable, but it is always there, lurking. I am nerdy about many things: literature, math, board games, cooking, art, history, ways that great design makes a space beautiful and functional . . . the usual.
Back in the days when phones had cords and I was in high school, I wanted to be an interior designer. However, life took me in a different direction: I majored in literature, worked for a decade in the commercial printing industry, earned a Master’s degree in teaching math, then taught math for nearly another decade. Through it all, I redecorated and/or remodeled every home, office, and classroom that I occupied.
Through my various roles, I developed the ability to communicate clearly, manage complex projects, and observe intently to uncover needs. A few years ago, I listened to my younger self and decided to return to school for interior design. (Aside: the collective reaction from my family and friends was a resounding, “What took you so long?!”) Imagine my joy when I discovered that being an organized, clear communicator with empathy is an asset in this field. My intrinsic nerdiness is captivated by the many technical details to master, and I find working with clients, contractors, and product experts is so much fun.
On the personal side, I live in NE Portland with my amazing husband of nearly 20 years. In my spare time, I am likely enjoying a nerdy pursuit, taking a hike (or at least a long walk through the neighborhood), or traveling.
